Is God Really There

Why I Chose to Write About God

This past week, I found myself thinking about the big and deeper questions in life.

I wrote a book called Why Choose God. I wrote it as if I had the right to do so—because I felt inspired.

This wasn’t my first attempt. Earlier, I wrote a book titled Choosing God Over Man. I spent two full days working on something I felt, to my very soul, that God wanted me to do. But when it was finished, it didn’t feel right. In fact, I thought it was awful. So I unpublished it.

Then I started again—this time from a completely different perspective.

The new book, Why Choose God, is built around five simple but powerful questions:
Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

When these questions are asked honestly and answered thoughtfully, they can bring clarity to almost any subject. But writing about God is not simple.

I had to ask myself: Am I qualified to do this?

I even found myself pleading with God about it. And yet, I felt a quiet push to continue.

I don’t consider myself the most religious person. But I do believe in God. I pray. Sometimes I simply sit and talk with Him. And in that relationship, I felt I had something worth expressing.

In this book, I explore those five questions—not only about God, but also about men and women—and ultimately, why I chose God.

In my mind, there is one God. No matter how differently we worship, we are reaching toward the same source. Christians were given the Ten Commandments, but I believe similar principles have been inspired across many religions. At the core, we are not so different—we simply interpret things in our own ways.

Even those who identify as agnostic or atheist often live by values that reflect those same principles.

Then there are the rules created by man—structured in different ways, for different reasons. These are not always universal, even though they may guide people in their own search for God.

The truth is, none of us knows with certainty who is right or wrong.

When we die, we may enter a different state of being—or we may simply return to the earth. If it is the latter, we won’t be aware of it. If it is something more, we will adjust to whatever that reality holds.

As for me, I believe we will live on—in a heavenly place, reunited with those we love. Free from the limitations of our physical bodies. Whole. Complete.

But belief is still belief. None of us can prove what lies beyond.

That is why we choose.
